Given the treachery of Aaron Burr, including his murder of Alexander Hamilton, it seems plausible that he was involved in a plot with Wilkinson to murder Lewis.

Wow, all that controversy reminds me of the JFK assassination. Who done it? Love this story.
I don't think he killed himself. He got killed and the killer got away.
Either way, a major loss to the world he left behind.
