Another thought-provoking post, Bill. With the topic being lost causes, I’m surprised that you didn’t mention the state religion of the Lost Cause that emerged in the former Confederacy after the Civil War
I deliberately didn't because that use of the term lost cause would have confused my argument. Ex-Confederates didn't deny that they had lost in 1865. What they denied was what it was that they had lost. They airbrushed slavery out of their cause, leaving only states' rights.
