Great essay! An amusing example of emotion vs. reason: A number of years ago, the daughter of a colleague whom I considered a personal friend as opposed to just a colleague, was getting married. I had my feelings hurt (emotion) because my wife and I didn't get invited to the wedding. But then reason took over and I thought "I don't have to shell out my hard-earned money for a gift."
