I just have a random question about Nixon. I was recently reading that in I believe in 1973 Nixon sold 10 tonnes of wheat to the Soviet Union. And it was later referred to as the “great grain robbery.” My question how did this episode go wrong?
Some people were upset that the United States was selling grain to the Soviets at all. American farmers liked it. The US government subsidized the deal. A worldwide shortage of grain soon caused prices to rise. The result was that Moscow paid much less than the world price. The critics thereupon called it the great grain robbery.
Thanks for replying. It is greatly appreciated. What I find fascinating about Nixon is that he was probably the first US president to recognize Latinos in America. What I mean by that being that Nixon was from southern California which has a big Latino community he pressured the census department to create an new category for ethnicity called “Hispanic”. Before Nixon there were only two categories on the census report for ethnicity “black” or “white”. He even got Latinos to advise the census department to help them make their decision.
I wouldn't give Nixon ANY credit for getting us out of Vietnam. It is well documented that he had the Paris peace talks during LBJ's term undermined. The war kept going until we finally left Saigon in 1975- another 6 to 7 years though combat officially ended for the US military in 1973. More than 21,000 died after Nixon took office - at least 36% of all casualties since 1959!
One theory I came across way back then was that the Watergate burglary was in reality a false flag incident orchestrated by the Democrats. The reasoning is this: The burglary was so amateurish that no governmental agency (CIA, FBI, etc.) would have bungled it - even the Mafia could have pulled the job off professionally so that nobody would have noticed the break-in.
ah the loony conspiracy stuff started well before current MAGA on the right. The burglers were well identified as GOP operatives- G Gordon Liddy never claimed he was innocent and in his book even said he had a knife and was prepared to kills someone the night of the break in
And it wasn't a "governmental agency" that committed the break in- it was simply operatives reporting to the White House
