I have got to meet Dawkins twice in Grand Rapids including getting his book signed, my favorite, The Ancestor's Tale (a fantastic exposition of evolution). In his presentations he likens the gene almost to what we now call a meme that spreads and replicates and sometimes morphs.

Didn’t Dawkins coin the term meme? The current popular usage is such a distortion of how Dawkins defined it.

Great timing! I have been re-reading “The Selfish Gene” for the first time since the 90s when I first picked it up. It certainly was an eye-opener and pushed my limits of acceptance of Faith over Science. But recently I have reconciled my rejection of the Catholic Church and I now challenge myself to find a balance between hard logical analysis and what is unknowable by our finite brains. Call me a centrist on this matter; I like to look towards both horizons. Oh, and The Blind Watchmaker is a fine companion book to Dawkins’ “The Selfish Gene.”
