I teach literature. often through the lens of history, so we discuss a lot of these things, and I always tell students that they "cant look at the past through modern eyes" and explain that, albeit much less eloquently than you did! With your permission, I will copy and share with my students the next time we have a difficult historical perspective to discuss.
