Well put. One question: I thought that Britain abolished slavery in the West Indies in 1833, with the final act Empire wide in 1843.

The Slavery Abolition Act was approved by Parliament in 1833. It provided for gradual emancipation. So yes, slavery existed in parts of the empire for a while longer. By the way, emancipation in the American North was often similar. New York state passed an emancipation law in 1799, but elderly slaves could still be encountered in New York in the 1820s.
