How have all those attempts to change a "political system controlled at the state and local level by corrupt bosses and their cronies and at the federal level by a Congress beholden to powerful business interests" worked? That description seems just as applicable now.

More democracy? don't term limits fall under that category? I don't think the founders envisioned a professional governmental (trying to avoid "ruling") class. And IMHO, we should re-do the Civil Service Act (ever watched "Yes, Minister?"), though I despair of how it could be done.

Oh, and direct election of Senators. so we no longer have "wealthy wannabes [bribing] state legislators to win seats there". But now we have people who've never held a job outside of government ensconced in lifetime sinecures making themselves another "millionaires club". And in Delaware, there is almost a career ladder: start in the state gov't, get elected to US House then wait for a Senate seat to open up, or move to the governorship.

So you want to game democracy to suit your politics? When will that ever not be the case?

Thank you once again for offering considerable light where only heat existed before. Thank you, as a social worker of many years, for a nod to the founder of our profession, Jane Addams. May her quote at the opening of your excellent piece echo often and loudly in these trying days. Bill Rusen
