I hadn't heard the term Tocqueville Effect, although I knew the concept. I recall reading some time back that it's that way with salary differentials. For example, in a hospital setting, the nurse's aides are envious of what the RNs earn, whereas the RNs are envious of what the MDs earn, and they in turn turn green with envy at what the hospital CEO makes. In the academic world, the adjunct lecturer is envious of what the tenured faculty earn, and they in turn feel the deans make too much, and on up the line to the university president and then the head football coach.
