I like this idea. Here in Shreveport we have a Confederate Memorial out in front of the Parish Courthouse. I’m not a big fan, but I get the people who are. My solution was to add statues, which we could have done. Caddo Parish had the second highest number of lynched people from Reconstruction until the end of Jim Crow. Why not erect a monument to those people and put it next to the Confederate Memorial. It could be a timeless reminder. Something that tells the whole story. After all, a large number of lynching were likely carried out by the men memorialized in the Confederate Memorial.

I subscribe fully to the concept of the more statues the better. My proposal for dating statues doesn't preclude that; in fact I think it would encourage it, as each generation competes to lay claim to its heroes. The fact that Lee now shares Monument Avenue with Arthur Ashe is hugely significant. The significance will be lost if Lee goes away.

I have argued for more signage by our statues but I see your point. A simple date is a better idea. Second, as a graduate of the University of Texas I'm very bothered by what is going on right now and wondering where, or if, it stops. By the current logic we need to rename the LBJ School and get rid of the LBJ Library.
